Collection of 2 data-responsive scarves, based on surveys about your personal and social identity.
“Silk Surveys” displays a generative visual language, made entirely out of geometric shapes. It researches their ability to expressively communicate human identity. As the title suggests, the silk scarves are outcomes of answers to a survey. Through our webstore, visitors can interact with the variables of the scarf by sharing information about themselves. This way, the experience becomes a dialogue between the algorithm and you.
Silk Surveys is an early release of a bigger collection that is currentlybeing developed. More information will be added soon.
“This project, essentially, is a challenge towards the boring use of geometric shapes in data visualisation; questioning how we could use these same shapes to not visualise data with a purely functional intention but rather with an engaging, artistic focus.
With reference to Bruno Munari’s ‘Square Circle Triangle’ series, which investigates the meaning of these symbols, I intended to use these symbols in a rather more expressive way to communicate meaning. ‘Meaning’ that I assign to these shapes, and with that, shapes that I reform to function as symbols for their assigned meaning.
All works have in common that they visualise data, data that communicates something about people. Their identity, their narratives, their experiences and aspirations. They are portraits of people I want to get to know.”
